The Legend of San Luis Rey Downs

In the heart of Bonsall’s Moosa Canyon lies a landscape carved by ambition and refined by the stride of champions. San Luis Rey Downs is not merely a training center; it is a 50-year legacy of equestrian excellence and an enduring symbol of California’s racing spirit. Born from a visionary quest to rival the prestige of Del Mar, this hallowed ground has served as the quiet proving ground for Kentucky Derby winners and Hall of Fame legends, cementing Bonsall’s reputation as the epicenter of the Thoroughbred world.

Few places in North America carry the historical weight of these acres. From its high-stakes origins in the 1960s to its modern-day rebirth as a state-of-the-art masterpiece, the center has remained the beating heart of Southern California’s racing circuit. It is a place where the air is thick with history, and the soil has been tested by the greatest athletes ever to run—proving that while tracks may fade, a true heritage only grows stronger with time.

The Heritage of San Luis Rey Downs

The story of the Training Center begins with the ambition of C. Arnholt Smith, the man known as “Mr. San Diego.” Seeking to create a facility that would rival—and eventually surpass—the prestige of the Del Mar Racetrack, Smith chose the rolling hills of Bonsall’s Moosa Canyon for his master project.

  • 1963: The San Luis Rey Country Club opens, featuring a championship golf course designed by the legendary William F. Bell.
  • 1969: Smith officially opens the San Luis Rey Downs Thoroughbred Training Center. It was designed as a world-class “satellite” facility where elite racehorses could train in a Mediterranean climate.

The mid-70s marked a period of upheaval for the facility as C. Arnholt Smith’s financial empire, centered around the United States National Bank, collapsed.

  • 1973: Following the largest bank failure in U.S. history at the time, Smith’s assets were liquidated. The training center, once a crown jewel of the Westgate-California Corporation, was placed into bankruptcy proceedings.
  • The Rescue: The Vessels family, legendary figures in the California racing world and founders of Los Alamitos, eventually stepped in. They recognized the track’s surface’s unique “kindness” and the strategic value of the Bonsall location.

Under the stewardship of the Vessels family, San Luis Rey Downs became the premier training ground for the “who’s who” of Thoroughbred racing.

  • 1984: The California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) designates SLRD as its only continuously approved auxiliary training facility, a status it maintains to this day.
  • A Legacy of Legends: During this era, the facility served as the training base for an unprecedented roster of champions, including:
    • Sunday Silence (Kentucky Derby & Preakness Winner)
    • Cigar (Two-time Horse of the Year)
    • Azeri (The legendary mare and Horse of the Year)
    • Fusaichi Pegasus, Gato Del Sol, and Ferdinand (Kentucky Derby Winners)

As the 21st century began, the facility transitioned into the hands of The Stronach Group (owners of Santa Anita Park), ensuring its place as a cornerstone of Southern California’s racing infrastructure.

  • 2017: The Lilac Fire: On December 7, the facility faced its greatest challenge when a catastrophic wildfire swept through the canyon. The racing community worldwide rallied to support the recovery.
  • 2018: The Rebirth: Following a massive reconstruction effort, the facility was reborn with state-of-the-art, fire-resistant galvanized steel stalls and modernized safety infrastructure, cementing its future for another generation.

Why It Matters Today

Today, San Luis Rey Downs remains more than just a track; it is the heart of Bonsall’s equestrian culture. Its history is a testament to the enduring allure of the “Land of the Mission”—a place where legends are born and the equestrian lifestyle is preserved.
